Markella Markotsis is keeping busy making her mark at Huntington High School. The junior is carving out a most impressive legacy as she goes about excelling academically, athletically and in her club activities.
But while the teenager has a full schedule each day, last summer was a different story. She mixed work and play and had lots of fun. “I hung out with my friends, watched the sunset a lot and worked at Huntington Crescent Club,” Ms. Markotsis said.
Since classes resumed on September 9, the junior has been all business. “Some of the classes that I am really interested in this year are Virtual Enterprise and AP Seminar,” Ms. Markotsis said. “So far, I really love Virtual Enterprise and I’m excited to work with Mrs. [Paige] Furman. It’s a class I’ve been wanting to take for a while. AP Seminar is also really nice so far. I like researching topics that I’m passionate about.”
When the bell sounds marking the end of ninth period and the school day, the teenager heads off to club meetings and varsity field hockey practice.
“I am co-vice president of Grandfriends, and I’m a member of the Key Club, environmental club and Habitat for Humanity,” Ms. Markotsis said.
A very strong student academically, the junior has already been inducted into the English Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society and membership in more such organizations seems assured.
The teenager also plays an important role on the Blue Devil varsity field hockey squad, which is in the midst of a winning campaign. “I love my team,” Ms. Markotsis said. “So far, we are having a really good season.”
While her four years of high school are barely half over, Ms. Markotsis is already giving some thought to her college options and career possibilities.
“My dream college is Penn State,” Ms. Markotsis said. “I love everything about it. It’s a big school, which I want and the campus is really pretty. I am also interested in the University of Delaware because its business program is really good. I plan on studying business or political science in college.”
