She’s one of the best swimmers on the Blue Devil varsity team this fall and Caelan Clayton is also one of the top students in Huntington High School’s Class of 2022.
Tutoring coordinator of the high school’s National Honor Society chapter and vice president of the English Honor Society, Ms. Clayton is also a member of the Spanish Honor Society, Math Honor Society and Science Honor Society as well as Huntington’s Key Club.
One of the Blue Devil swimming and diving team’s captains, the teenager worked part time last summer at the Huntington YMCA as a swimming instructor and lifeguard.
“I swam and competed on my club team called HYB (Huntington YMCA Bluefish),” said Ms. Clayton about her summer activities. “I also competed in several triathlons. In August, I attended an online AI program for two weeks, where I learned about the fundamentals of artificial intelligence. At the end of the program, I worked on an AI project with my group to teach the computer to detect facial emotions.”
Ms. Clayton is enrolled in Advanced Placement Calculus BC, AP Physics, AP Micro/Macro Economics, Spanish V Honors, AP English Literature and Composition and pep band. “The two classes that interest me the most this year are AP Lit and AP Economics,” she said. “I am looking forward to working with Mr. [James] Graber and Mrs. [Kelly] Quintero this year.”
The teenager said she is interested in pursuing a college degree in either computer science or cybersecurity.
“I took AP Computer Science last year and really enjoyed it, which is how I decided what I wanted to major in,” Ms. Clayton said. “My career goal is to become a naval officer. I am currently applying to the US Naval Academy and for a Navy ROTC scholarship. Some of the ROTC colleges that I’m interested in include the University of Rochester and Purdue University.”
