The Huntington girls’ volleyball team looked impressive while turning back visiting Newfield in three straight games last Friday night in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium. The victory gives the Blue Devils a 3-2 record this fall.
Huntington captured games by 25-15, 25-21 and 25-14 to edge Newfield. The meet played out before a crowd of parents and students that encouraged the Blue Devils with constant applause.
Huntington is coached by Todd Donaghy. The Blue Devil squad includes senior captains Shannon Kehoe and Grace Stolfa; sophomore Kathryn Barba; juniors Megan Donaghy, Lauren Gennarelli, Renee McKean and Haileigh Smith; and seniors Maddy Bavaro, Cassidy Casabona, Kianna Crisuola, Naysa Escobar, Caroline Gorecki, Francesca Stamatatos and Sophia Toscano. The Blue Devils will travel to Smithtown West and Northport this week for meets before returning for a home match on October 13 against Half Hollow Hills East.
“It’s going great,” junior Haleigh Smith said. “We have a team that Coach Donaghy is confident can make it to the playoffs. We have been winning the games we’re supposed to and competing strongly against the bigger schools. I think the team has grown as one and we work really well together.”
Huntington has improved by leaps and bounds since the season began on Monday, August 23. Donaghy expects more improvement to come. It will be needed if the Blue Devils are to reach post-season play.
“I feel like the season has been going great so far,” Stolfa said. “Everyone has definitely been stepping up and all the players want to compete. I can’t wait to see where the rest of the season takes us as we hope to make playoffs.”
