The Huntington High School boys’ junior varsity soccer team turned in another strong season, compiling an overall record of 12-5-1.
Coached by Jose Alfaro and captained by Yovanni Rivera, the 30 player strong squad gave its opponents all they could handle.
Rivera and fellow sophomore midfielder Cruz Flores-Andrade led the Blue Devils. “Yovani was a box-to-box midfielder,” Alfaro said. “He never stopped running and never declined a challenge. Cruz played both midfield and defense and supported our forwards. He was a key player.”
The Blue Devil JV frequently cruised past its opponents. Huntington outscored its foes 63-13. “The hunger to win, learn and be disciplined, carried and displayed every day was motivating and inspiring,” Alfaro said. “It challenged everyone in a positive manner to strive to be better.”
The roster also included freshmen Kenneth Cano Soto, Bradley Contreras, Brian Hernandez Jimenez, Colin Lennon, Brian Lynch, Keegan Malone, Carlos Marroquin, Raul Ortega Salgado, Nicholas Plachta, Anthony Rodriquez-Rivera, Jayden Schneider, Zachary Schnitzer, James Vohs, Parker Wands and Luke Wesnofske; sophomores Harris Alba, Jake Amend, Edgar Canales, Andrew Castillo, Orlando Chinchilla, Tyler Godin, Nikolai Lulewich, Jehu Ramsay, Leuris Tavarez-Espinal and Alan Wilberger; and juniors Ryan Curran, Franklin Granados and Justin Perez Castillo.
Marroquin and Wilberger led the Huntington JV in scoring. The Blue Devils tallied 11 shutouts in 18 games with Nicholas Plachta in goal.
Many of the junior varsity players are expected to be promoted to the varsity level next fall. Many others will be returning the JV and form a very strong nucleus for the 2022 campaign.
