While relatively few in number, when Huntington High School Italian Honor society members put their enthusiasm and drive behind any initiative it can only be a success.

The organization has been collecting non-perishable food items to benefit hungry local families who are financially challenged. Italian Honor Society members are striving to provide a delicious Thanksgiving Day meal experience and have been collaborating with the Helping Hand Rescue Mission to deliver the goods to those who need them the most.

While Huntington High School’s Italian Honor Society might be one of the smallest organizations in the building, it has always been among the proudest.

Formally known as Benvenuta nella Societa Onoraria Italica, Huntington’s National Honor Society chapter is comprised of group of exceptional students who have all been high achievers in the study of the Italian language. Members of the group have also demonstrated a wonderful appreciation of Italian culture and civilization.

The organization’s current year executive board consists of Nathali Ulloa (president), Ryan Porzio (vice president), Adriana LoScalzo (treasurer), Daniela Luca (secretary) and Victoria Befumo (historian). Teacher Natalia Kopshti serves as the group’s faculty advisor.

The Helping Hand Rescue Mission has set a goal of helping to feed 1,200 families on Thanksgiving. “We collected a lot of food to help our families that are in need,” Ms. Befumo said.

Fundraising activities for the Italian Honor Society’s initiatives include after school sales of baked goods and sales of pizza at the homecoming bonfire festival. The organization holds an annual trivia night, offers tutoring to students and conducts food and toy drives to serve the community.

The national organization is sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Italian, which was founded in 1924 “to promote the study of Italian language, literature and culture in schools, colleges and universities in North America,” according to the group’s website. It has about 1,500 members worldwide.
