A young Huntington High School golf team comprised overwhelmingly of underclassmen captured the league title this fall. The Blue Devils finished with an overall mark of 7-3.
The team consisted of 21 golfers with only four of them being seniors. Kevin Drake, Robert Eriksen, Andrew Schirripa and Joe Sclafani will graduate in June.
Mike Marinello once again served as Huntington’s head coach. Robert Colvin and James Graber joined the staff as volunteer assistants.
Three of Huntington’s six golfers in the starting lineup qualified for the conference championships and the team qualified for the county tournament.
Will Fallon notched All League and All Conference honors. Kevin Drake was All-League.
After a disappointing two stroke loss to Half Hollow Hills West, the Blue Devils rebounded with back to back wins over Elwood (7-2) and Half Hollow Hills East (8-1). “It is a very competitive league from top to bottom and every team was capable of beating each other,” Marinello said. “This is a team that loves competition. They know each match will be tight and they have been able to rise to the occasion.”
Huntington wrapped up the season with four straight victories, including a 9-0 win over defending league champion Walt Whitman.
The season finale saw the Blue Devils top Hills East, 7-2. Huntington appears very well positioned to achieve success in the years to come.
In addition to the seniors and Fallon, who is a talented freshman, the roster consisted of seventh graders Graham Gooch and Joseph Perotti; freshmen Anthony Addeo, Andrew Case, Chase Gadaire, James Larson, George Mueger, Jibreel Murtaza, Ryan Scanlon, Jake Severine and Harrison Uvena; sophomores Thomas Girimonti, Declan Kehoe and Nicholas Sclafani; and juniors James Roselli and Joseph Toscano.
