Kathryn Montefusco and Caelan Clayton along with six other Blue Devil swimmers turned in solid performances at the Suffolk League I Championships at Hauppauge, medaling in many of the 12 events.
Montefusco bested her state championship qualifying times, placing first in the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. “This adds to her total of five state qualification times this season, which also include the 100 freestyle, 100 butterfly and 200 IM,” said Huntington head coach Christopher Helmke, who is assisted by Meg McConnell.
Clayton also shined, medaling in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. Clayton and Montefusco also medaled in the 200 medley relay and the 400 free relay. “Caelan is also on the cusp of qualifying for states in the 100 fly,” Helmke said. “We look forward to her performance at the counties.”
The Blue Devils enjoyed a string of additional strong performances, including ones by seniors Ainsley Proctor and Abby Lewis, who medaled in the 200 free relay. Sydney Cordeiro, Rachel Deegan, Simonne Bielski and Josie Sullivan also contributed to the team’s success as they worked to lower personal best times.
“By placing fourth this year, our team did an excellent job of competing in a fiercely competitive league,” Helmke said.
Huntington recently honored its seven seniors, including Simonne Bielski-Gregori, Caelan Clayton, Sydney Cordeiro, Rachel Deegan, Abigail Lewis, Grace McCallion and Ainsley Proctor.
The Blue Devil roster also consists of seventh graders Gemma Bedell, Avery Joynt and Ella Van Horn; eighth graders Jessica Lee and Riley Sullivan; freshmen Isabelle Gregorio and Josephine Sullivan; junior Kathryn Montefusco.
