Huntington High School teachers have become celebrities of sorts thanks to a really cool project that business students carried to fruition with remarkable results. The teenagers developed magazine covers and profile features in colorful formats for about 90 faculty members and displayed the gorgeous art and literary work along both sides of the building’s main hallway.
“I wanted to do something for the faculty in honor of Teacher Appreciation Week,” business teacher Paige Furman said. “As everyone knows, it’s been a wild year and I thought everyone could use a little extra boost. I figured I could incorporate it into both my Virtual Enterprise and Marketing classes, as we often discuss advertising and branding. That’s exactly what a magazine cover is after all; the ultimate impulse buy.”
What the business students designed and developed is really something very unique and downright impressive. It’s hard to distinguish between many of the magazine covers and profile features from real-life magazines. Principal Brenden Cusack is one of the biggest admirers of the teenager’s finished products.
“I brought it up to my students and they jumped at the opportunity to express their appreciation and admiration for their teachers,” Mrs. Furman said. “Danielle Cordella (secretary to the high school principal) helped me compile a list of every faculty member and each student chose one or two teachers to feature so that everyone would be included. Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough students to cover the entire building staff, so I’m looking forward to doing this in years to come for other departments like guidance, aides, secretaries, security, building and grounds, administration, etc.”
Students, faculty and staff have all been found stopping and browsing through the hallway display
“When I reached out to Mr. Cusack, he was immediately on board and even helped with the final placement,” Mrs. Furman said.
Huntington UFSD plans to post on its website as many of the profiles as possible as PDFs so community members can also review and admire the work of the business students.
“As the students started to complete and then print their projects, I was blown away by their thoughtfulness and creativity,” Mrs. Furman said. “They really took great care and pride in their work and I think the teachers could see that.”
