It was another great day for the Huntington High School boys’ track and field team, which put on an awesome display at the Westhampton Beach Invitational last Saturday night.
The Blue Devils swept all three relay races with electrifying times that are some of the best on Long Island and in the state this spring.
Huntington's 4x100m relay is comprised of lead leg Cameron Santa-Maria, second leg senior Anthony Joseph, third leg senior Chad Rowe and anchor junior Tyriek Mays-McKoy. They circled the oval in 43.69 seconds. The time was just shy of Huntington’s personal best this year of 43.30, which ranks No. 1 on Long Island and No. 4 in the state.
Huntington’s 4x400m relay featured lead leg freshman Jahmar Francis, second leg junior Quincy Chery, third leg senior Samir Rathore and anchor Anthony Joseph. The race was the closest of all the relays with William Floyd’s anchor Eddy Vu, who is one of the state’s top short sprinters in the 100 and 200. Vu passed Joseph on the first turn and then Joseph regained the lead on the backstretch leaving Vu with the hard task of trying to pass him on the turn again. Joseph out kicked him in the final 50 meters of the race giving the Blue Devils a smooth victory in 3:28. “Joseph ran a very smart strategic anchor leg,” Huntington head coach Ronald E. Wilson said.
The 4x800m relay was comprised of four seniors, including lead leg Andrew McKenzie, second leg Isaiah James, third leg Aidan Heller and anchor CJ Kiviat. The group easily outran the field away in 8:11 which is currently ranks second on LI and in the state.
Kiviat also won the open 800m run in 2:00.1 with James finishing sixth in 2:04. Joseph and Francis finished the open 400m dash in the 1-2 positions. Santa-Maria and Rowe finished the open 200m dash third and fourth respectively.
In his first year with Huntington’s track program, Rathore ran a personal best time of 62.8 seconds in the 400m hurdles for fourth place finish.
In the field events, senior Mekai Butts placed first in both shot put and discus. Senior Will McClellan was fourth in shot and fourth in discus. Sophomore Amari Huitt-May placed fifth in discus and sixth in shot put.
“It was a great day to be a Blue Devil,” Wilson said.
