Huntington High School’s competitive dance team is planning tryouts for prospective new members on Wednesday and Thursday, June 23-24 on the Blue Devil Stadium turf field.
The Highsteppers are especially interested in students with experience in dance or gymnastics, but the tryout sessions are open to everyone.
Tryouts will be held on both days from 4-7 p.m. Participants should wear dance attire bring along jazz shoes, sneakers, a mask and water.
The Highsteppers are Huntington High School’s hip kick, pom and dance team. They entertain at halftime of football and basketball games, perform at the annual pep rally and compete in regional and national dance championships.
This year’s Highsteppers squad is led by junior captains Jillian LoTurco and Ella Naima and senior captains Hallie Armengau, Lainey Carney and Jailyn Fuentes.
“If you love to dance, travel and make lifelong friends, Huntington Highsteppers will be the perfect fit for you,” Ms. LoTurco said.
Late summer conditioning and practices kickoff the season, which runs through the national championships in Florida in February. Practices are typically held from 3-5 p.m. on Monday-Wednesday during the school year.
The Highsteppers’ halftime shows are always thrilling affairs. The performances highlight the exceptional dance skills and athleticism of the team members and never fail to elicit cheers from the crowd.
Competitions feature separate jazz, pom and team performance components. The group has gained a national reputation and has won many honors over the past decade.
