Huntington High School’s world language honor societies are proud organizations committed to recognizing student excellence and engaging in community service activities.
The French, Italian, Latin and Spanish honor societies are holding their annual induction ceremonies in a virtual format this year, welcoming dozens of new members who are mastering a second or even a third language. The format was dictated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the limits on gatherings.
Society faculty advisors Deidre Mayer (French), Natalia Kopshti (Italian), Kristin Fortunato (Latin) and Nadine Araoz (Spanish) all participated in their respective induction ceremonies, looking on with pride as the teenagers recited their respective society’s pledge.
“Congratulations to the Huntington High School students who have been inducted into the high school’s four language honor society chapters,” said Judy Goris Moroff, district director of world languages and bilingual programs. “The world language induction ceremonies were held virtually, but that didn’t change the spirit and tenacity of our Huntington students.”
The French Honor Society welcomed Doch Annsler Antoine, Sophie Bradford, Aislyn Franciscovich, Annika Galvin, Naidely Fernandez Guitterez, Cecelia Kye, Ryan Lawless, Allie Malone, Jack O’Brien and Dawin Preval into its ranks.
The Italian Honor Society brought Anthony Annuniziata, Victoria Befumo, Zoe Dumas, Vincent Grassi, Emma Hannigan, Timothy Kusterbeck, Isabella Lanfranco, Daniela Luca, Brad Nisipeanu, Jeremy Reyes and Teddy Tiliakos into its fold.
The Latin Honor Society opened its arms to Nadeera Ali, Laurel Bonn, Megan Donaghy, Lauren Gennarelli, Angie Hernandez Ramos, Sarah Krisch, Mary Marinello and Haileigh Smith.
The new Spanish Honor Society members include Genesis Acevedo, Grace Allen, Alyson Baker, Katherine Balm, Matthew Beasley, Evelyn Benitez, Simonne Bielski, Hannah Byers, Jazlyn Chapas-Oliva, Charlotte Cheshire, Lucas Cirlincione, Dylan Coleman, Kianna Criscuola, Rachel Deegan, Elizabeth Elle, Deanna Elvir, Gianna Forte, Madeleine Gabriel, Matthew Gerardi, Charlotte Gordon, Cristel Hernandez Reyes, Shannon Kehoe, Matthew Lange, Donna Lazo-Cuchels, Isabella Lima, Michelle Lopez, Jennifer Lopez Del Cid, Floris Lopez Zelaya, Karen Maldonado, Markella Markotsis, Bliden Martinez Argueta, Grace McCallion, Renee McKean, Kathryn Montefusco, Monica Morales-Alvarez, Maryuri Nunez Gomez, Soraya Ortega-Salgado, Jillian Panos, James Rosselli, Chloe Schiman, Evan Spagnoletti, Karla Velasquez-Umanzor, Eliza Walther and Nicholas Zahn.
“These students have worked extremely hard these past few months in their hybrid classrooms,” Ms. Goris Moroff said. “It is a testament to their perseverance during these challenging times that our students are more immersed in our global society than ever. They are an integral part of this school community.”
Each of the four honor societies is led by a dynamic executive board, which has worked closely with the respective group’s faculty advisor and membership to advance its goals. Each organization’s leaders played key roles in the induction ceremony for their group.
“Membership in a world language honor society is certainly a goal that many students set out to achieve, so it’s always great to see hard work pay off, especially during this pandemic and with students attending hybrid classes,” Ms. Goris Moroff said. “I know how proud all the teachers, administrators and parents are of this achievement.”
