Blue Devil Golf in Transition

The Huntington golf team is in transition with a young roster

May 19 , 2021

The Huntington High School golf team is in the midst of a transition, having lost many of its best golfers in recent years to graduation and now on the cusp of losing a few more next month. The Blue Devils are already a young squad and that will continue next fall.

Veteran coach Michael Marinello understands that graduation is part of high school sports and that there’s a need to bring in more underclassmen on a regular basis. The Blue Devils are doing just that and hope to add to their numbers when the new season officially gets underway on Monday, August 23.

This spring’s team was competitive throughout its abbreviated five match schedule. The team was captained by Jack Giamo, who was unable to compete due to an injury, but who nevertheless provided Huntington with the leadership it needed.

Kyle Colleluori and Joe Sclafani captured All-League honors after great seasons on the links.

“Kyle is the ultimate teammate and has been a four year starter for us,” Marinello said. “Joe is our junior captain and he continues to improve as a golfer.”

Giamo was injured over the winter and couldn’t tee-off for the Blue Devils, but he still pitched in to help the team.

“Jack is a great captain,” Marinello said. “Although he was hurt, he was at every practice helping the younger golfers.”

The Blue Devil roster also included eighth graders Anthony Addeo and Jake Severine; freshmen Declan Kehoe and Nicholas Sclafani; juniors Kevin Drake, Robert Eriksen, Carl Pulizzotto and Andrew Schirripa and senior Liam Hassett.

“We will be young next fall,” Marinello said. “We need to gain experience.”
