Freshman Bryan Lizama scored 12 goals to lead the Huntington High School junior varsity boys’ soccer team to a 7-4-3 record.

Lizama and fellow sophomore forward Kevin Veliz formed a potent offensive unit for the Blue Devil team, which was coached by Jose Alfaro.

“Bryan and Kevin led by example, worked hard and were determined to play well every game,” Alfaro said. “They eventually played for the varsity team.”

The roster also included freshmen Harris Alba, Jake Amend, Jose Cabrera-Zelaya, Jr., Andrew Castillo, Orlando Chinchilla, Jose Flores Flores, Cruz Flores-Andrade, Dylan Hayden, Edwin Marroquin Chavez, Jehu Ramsay and Yovanni Rivera; sophomores Roman Borovica, Ryan Curran, Franklin Granados, Vincent Grassi and Justin Perez Castillo; and juniors Cristian Avelar-Romero and Orlando Guardado Chincilla.

“It was a very close team that has a high ceiling for growth and development,” Alfaro said.

The season was delayed from last fall to March-April due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A long list of safety related protocols were followed each day. Alfaro said one of the team’s best accomplishments this season was “coming together after a difficult year.”

The Blue Devils defeated Centereach (4-1), Harborfields (4-3), Newfield (1-0), North Babylon (3-1), Copiague (10-0), Half Hollow Hills East (7-0) and Bellport (10-0). The team tied Kings Park (2-2), Central Islip (0-0) and Smithtown East (2-2) and dropped games to Connetquot (3-1), Smithtown West (4-1), Northport (2-0) and West Islip (5-1).

Alfaro is already looking ahead to next fall. Teams will begin practicing on Monday, August 23. “Hopefully, we will have more time to train and develop,” he said.
