Jefferson Primary School Principal Valerie Capitulo-Saide took pleasure in announcing the names of April’s Citizen of the Month Award recipients and the students who were honored took delight in being recognized.
The Citizen of the Month Award is known informally as the Spot Award. Why? Well, when a Jefferson student displays commendable behavior, teachers and staff members “spot” the youngster. In a year free of COVID-19, an all-grades assembly is held monthly to recognize the students who have been “spotted” the most.
This year the monthly assemblies are on hold, but Ms. Capitulo-Saide and faculty members are still finding a way to honor outstanding students each month.
April’s honorees include Quinn Burke, Jaydan Cavallo, Myles Copeland, Sage Daly, Julia Garcia Alvarez, Kimberly Granados Ventura, Leila LaCourte, Lillian Matarese, Molly McCormack, Nicole Mendia Baez, Liam Mortensen, Nathaly Reyes, Frankie Saramago, Valery Say Alvarez, William Schaeffer and Yacelyn Villatoro Villatoro.
Now let’s get back to the “Spot Award.” Still a little fuzzy about the whole concept? Here’s an easy to understand answer. The Jefferson Primary School mascot is a jaguar, an animal known for its spotted appearance. Every Jefferson student is trying to get spotted so they can be an award winner, too.
With less than two months remaining in the 2020/21, Jefferson faculty and staff members of PTA officials are planning for some fun events while continuing to take precautions to keep everyone safe.
Jefferson students have adapted remarkably well to all of the modifications and restrictions that have been imposed and like their counterparts across Huntington UFSD and even the world, the youngsters can’t wait to get back to normal.
