The spring semester started in fine fashion at Southdown Primary School where students continue to brush aside the inconveniences brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and work hard with their teachers and classmates.
The Southdown community has a way of overcoming obstacles and turning challenges into new opportunities to grow. Principal Scott Oshrin recently took delight in announcing the names of a group of sensational students who were all recognized as Stars of the Month for February.
One Southdown student is selected monthly from every class in the building for formal recognition at the “splash” assembly. The school considers these youngsters to be its stars of the month. Due to the ongoing pandemic, splash assemblies have been held via a virtual format.
February’s award recipients include:
Universal Pre-Kindergarten: Vivian Golden; Kindergarten: Carter Paiz, Sebastian Tassie, Haley Siguenza, Henry Fuentes Lopez; First grade: Kaileen Silva, John “Jack” McCabe, William O’Dwyer, Darlin Hernandez Blanco, Lisbeth Zavala Aguilar; Second grade: Amira Ingram, Don‘te Parker, Sydney Tuccillo, Theo Yako; Third grade: Jade Ingram, Juliana Perotti, Brayan Caballero Reyes
Splash Assembly programs always carry valuable themes for students and the most recent one was no different. Teacher Pamela Schwarting the importance of shields, putting the word in context and explaining different types of shields and how they are employed.
The virtual assembly was held during the regular school day so that students in school and at home could both view the proceedings simultaneously.
Mr. Oshrin also recognized lunch monitors Kathi Bonessi, Betsy Citera, Alexandra Gentils and Wendy Puca for all of their hard work during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, striving to keep students safe while also allowing them to have fun during recess periods.
