Washington Primary School students have navigated through an incredibly challenging year with grace, dignity and enthusiasm. The COVID-19 pandemic hasn’t been easy on anyone, especially children who have had much of their usual lives turned upside down.
Like their brother and sister students across Huntington UFSD, Washington youngsters have made the best of the situation and never lost their positive frame of mind. Everyone is looking forward to a return for normalcy and hoping it happens sooner rather than later.
“Washington students celebrated a year of challenge and growth during our annual field day events,” Principal Michelle Richards said. “This year field day looked a little different. The schedule was modified to limit the number of students, faculty and staff on the field. It took place over the course of three days. However, the fun was magnanimous!”
Washington students always seem to rise to any occasion. This year has been no different.
“Mr. [Eric] Mininni and the Washington physical education department planned field day activities that tested skill and agility. As the music played, the children carried pizza boxes through an obstacle course, cooled down with the water race, dribbled a soccer ball across the field, hopped in potato sacks and much more,” Dr. Richards said.
Last year’s COVID-19 related lockdown beginning in mid-March and switch to fully remote learning precluded field day from being held. It was the first time since the school opened in September 1954 that field day wasn’t held. So it was good to return to tradition in 2021, even if it did take on a different form.
“The final score in our friendly field day color war was 1,015 points for the blue team and 1,021 for the white team,” Dr. Richard said. “We celebrated everyone’s hard work and effort. The PTA provided water for the cool down station and ices for after the day’s events.”
It might have been a completely different format, but Washington’s students showed the same energy, enthusiasm and downright exuberance that have long been known for.
