Teacher Jennifer Fazin has had her Creative Crafts students at Huntington High School doing what they do best; creating great art. In this case, props for this month’s prom.
The teenage artists have been donating their craft-making skills and time to developing various props that will be used to decorate the tents that will be erected for this year’s prom on the Blue Devil Stadium field.
Mrs. Fazin’s students have worked on 26 table centerpieces and also made a large pop art food display to enhance the dance floor tent. The Creative Crafts course focuses on handmade decorative art that serves a practical function.
“This event allowed these students the opportunity to create props or decorate tables on a budget using local resources and stores such as Dollar Tree or items found in their very own homes,” Mrs. Fazin said.
The student-artists proved to be up for the challenge of making something really special for a special night in the lives of their Huntington High School classmates.
“I was very excited when Mrs. Fazin told us that we were making decorations for the prom because I knew how excited my sister and her friends, who are seniors this year, felt about being able to attend their senior prom,” freshman Ella O’Heir said. “I was very impressed with Mrs. Fazin’s creative twist on the enchanted forest theme. Using everyday items like pool noodles and insulation foam, she was able to help us make a candy forest, which will be a very fun surprise for the seniors and was a lot of fun to create with my classmates for our final class project.”
The Creative Crafts students had fun with the assignment. “I was surprised that we were even having a prom this year,” Madelyn Diaz said. “Being a senior during a pandemic has led to many disappointments. It will be a night to remember, for sure, and it will be even more special when we see that all the hard work we put into it, pay off. I’m glad I got involved.”
The art is just great stuff in the opinion of the students and their teacher.
“When I heard Huntington UFSD was doing everything in its power to make sure the senior class of 2021 would have a prom, I knew they would need as much help as possible to make this event special in such a short period of time,” Mrs. Fazin said. “I am so proud of the enthusiasm and hard work these students put in every day and that they were able to use their abilities learned throughout the year to create artwork for a great cause.”
