Renee Jones, Carol-Ann Kinane and Diane Klaverweiden are this year’s recipients of the Huntington Special Education PTA’s Distinguished Service Award.
Ms. Jones, a longtime special education department chair and Mrs. Klaverweiden, a Flower Hill Primary School teacher aide, are both retiring this year. Mrs. Kinane teaches at Woodhull Intermediate School and plans to continue doing so for many years to come.
“As you are well aware, this was not an easy year, and if we could have given each of our special education teachers and aides an award, we certainly would have,” SEPTA officials said. “They truly went above and beyond to reach their students in so many different ways that they are really all deserving.”
Huntington SEPTA traditionally presents the Distinguished Service Award at a festive June luncheon, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, that isn’t possible this year.
“This award of recognition and appreciation was established to honor individuals in our district who have displayed a commitment to the success of students with special needs and their parents or guardians,” SEPTA officials said. “Through their dedication, creativity and advocacy, they have enriched the lives of students with special needs and have assisted them in achieving their goals.”
The three award recipients were called and informed of their selection. SEPTA will be delivering lawn signs acknowledging each of the award winner along with plants.
It is with true appreciation and respect that we honor Ms. Jones, Mrs. Klaverweiden and Mrs. Kinane for the impact they have had on our special education students and families,” SEPTA said.
SEPTA’s executive board consists of co-presidents Denise Murtagh and Rene Babich Dumas, co-vice presidents Kerri Brandine and Corinne Heffernan, corresponding secretary Kristin Peters, recording secretary Kerry Rinaldi, treasurer Charlene Fehrenbacher and PTA Council delegates Meaghan Buffa and Kimberley Steinberg.
Huntington SEPTA advocates for and supports the special education community as well as all Huntington UFSD students. The group’s membership consists of parents, teachers and administrators. .
