With less than three weeks remaining, Jefferson Primary School is set to conclude the surreal 2020/21 school year with a flourish. Students have a spring in their step as temperature’s heat up. pleasant.
A great group of youngsters were recently presented with awards for their work throughout the building. Principal Valerie Capitulo-Saide announced the names of May’s Citizens of the Month Award recipients and the students could not have been happier to be recognized.
The Citizen of the Month Award is known informally as the Spot Award. Why? Well, when a Jefferson student displays commendable behavior, teachers and staff members “spot” the youngster.
The awards are usually presented during a monthly assembly program, but that’s not possible during the COVID-19 pandemic, so alternative means have been developed.
Everyone hopes the monthly assembly programs will be able to resume next year, especially since they serve an educational purpose. The school’s classroom teachers give a brief anecdote providing specific details as to the respectful, responsible and/or safe behaviors each Citizen of the Month Award winner demonstrated throughout the month. The anecdote is read when the student’s name is announced at the assembly. Faculty members believe that highlighting specific examples will support and encourage such behaviors throughout the building, at home and in the community.
May’s Citizen of the Month honorees include Luis Argueta Guzman, Diego Andrade Crespin, Kener Caceres Guzman, Daniel Cruz, Lucas Diaz Morales, Elliott Frintzilas, Josue Granados Medrano, Daniela Guardado, Jeiry Guzman Rodriguez, Jenny Rose Muskopf, Margaret Rodriguez Juarez, Jackson Spitaleri, Matthew Sperling, Zachary Sperling, Sarah Thomas and Mia Welter.
Several special events are on Jefferson’s calendar in coming weeks. While modifications are required for just about every group gathering, Jefferson faculty and staff are striving to still make the school year’s conclusion special for students.
The school will say goodbye to its third graders during a pair of ceremonies scheduled for Monday, June 21 at 10:15 a.m. and 2 p.m.
