The Finley girls' soccer team is looking forward to a great fall season

July 19, 2021

It’s Linda Costello-Roth’s final season and J. Taylor Finley Middle School’s longtime girls’ soccer coach wants to make it the best one ever as she prepares to lead the team into the fall season.

Mrs. Costello-Roth has already announced she will be retiring at the end of the 2021/22 school year, but in the meantime she intends to give the Finley girls’ soccer team and Huntington High School’s new Unified bowling squad her best efforts as she looks forward to an outstanding year.

There are 14 veterans eligible to return to the field for Finley as incoming eighth graders. The group includes Julianna Ackerman, Ruby Baliber, Emma Boyle, Bridget Callery, Grayson Dunn, Wynne Franciscovich, Chelsea Gordon, Mildred Hernandez-Veliz, Erika Hernandez-Veliz, Emili Licona Banegas, Giselle Salmeron, Cameron Smith, Abigail Vasquez Mendez and Jolie Weinschreider.

Assisting Coach Costello-Roth will be Ysrael Gonzalez. Section XI has released a tentative 10 game schedule for Finley. The team will play five home and five away games against area middle schools. Finley’s home games will be played on the main athletic field. The first game is set for September 24 with the final game slated for November 4.

The schedule features the following games:

• September 24: Finley at Oldfield at 4 p.m.
• September 29: Finley at Deer Park at 4 p.m.
• October 4: Elwood at Finley at 4:15 p.m.
• October 7: Finley at Stimson at 4 p.m.
• October 13: Wyandanch at Finley at 4 pm.
• October 18: Finley at Kings Park at 4 p.m.
• October 21: Hauppauge at Finley at 4 p.m.
• October 26: Oldfield at Finley at 4 p.m.
• October 29: Deer Park at Finley at 4 p.m.
• November 4: Finley at Elwood at 4:15 p.m.

“We anticipate an excellent year,” Coach Costello-Roth said. “We have some great players returning as eighth graders and I have been hearing very good things about the incoming seventh graders. We plan on learning more about the game, refining our skills, being very competitive and having fun.”

The school doctor will be at Finley on Wednesday, September 1 at 8 a.m. to give physical exams for student-athletes who want one. Athletes can submit paperwork (private physician physical form and interval health history) to the nurse on Monday and Tuesday, August 30-31 between 9a.m. – 3 p.m. and requalify for fall sports. Athletes can also sign up for their respective team and get cleared by the nurse on Thursday and Friday, September 9-10 during their respective lunch period.

Checklist prior to tryouts:

Every student needs to get re-qualified by the school nurse for each sport season. The nurse can only clear a student if they have the following forms on file:
