Cristian Avelar-Romero spends his days excelling in his classes, participating in the activities of five different academic honor societies and the Key Club and playing on the Blue Devil soccer team and when the Huntington High School junior dreams, it’s of capturing a full scholarship to a prestigious college.
Mr. Avelar-Romero is clearly one of the brightest lights in Huntington’s Class of 2022. He’s an articulate, well-read and altogether charming young man who works hard every day.
“Some of the courses that I’m especially interested in this year are Advanced Placement Biology, AP English Language and Composition and Pre-Calculus Honors,” Mr. Avelar-Romero said. “These are all challenging classes that push me and motivate me to work hard. I’m excited to be working with Mrs. [Deborah] Beck, Ms. [Nicole] DuBois and Mrs. [Patricia] Avelli in these classes.”
The teenager plays on the Blue Devil boys’ soccer team and he is interested in running on the spring boys’ track team. Inducted into five different academic societies, Mr. Avelar-Romero hopes to get involved in the community service activities of the organizations along with participating in Huntington’s Key Club chapter.
“I consider most of my classmates as friends, but those who I am closest to are Robbie Smith, Pablo Aparicio, Jeison Blanco, Michael Mesen, Joel Alvarez, Daniel Alzate, Enri Reyes, and Liam Lennon,” Mr. Avelar-Romero said.
The junior has earned spectacular grades in his classes. A member of the high school’s High Honor Roll, Mr. Avelar-Romero is respected and admired by his teachers.
“Throughout my whole time in Huntington UFSD I have had the most amazing teachers since the start of kindergarten at Jefferson Primary School,” Mr. Avelar-Romero said. “Some of those teachers include Mrs. [Gina] Colica, Mrs. [Jordan] Schessler, Mrs. [Ayallah] Jeddah, Mrs. [Camille] Tedeschi, Mrs. [Aimee] Antorino and Mr. [Alex] Nelson.”
Truth be told, Mr. Avelar-Romero has worked well with every faculty member he’s crossed paths with over the years. “For me, I feel as if all the teachers that I’ve had have stood out to me,” he said. “They all push me to do my best and make sure I learn in a fun environment.”
The teenager’s advice to incoming high school freshmen? “Always stay on top of your work and enjoy your time here at Huntington with your friends, because these next four years can go by quickly,” Mr. Avelar-Romero said.
The junior hasn’t compiled a list of potential colleges that he is interested in attending, “but I have always dreamed of going off to a prestigious college and being able to go off with a full ride scholarship,” Mr. Avelar-Romero said. “I’m not sure what I will be majoring in, but I am interested in the math and science fields.”
With a drive and work ethic that is second to none, Mr. Avelar-Romero appears capable of accomplishing whatever he sets out to do and that goes for landing that scholarship he is striving to attain.
“My experience here at Huntington High School has been great,” Mr. Avelar-Romero said. “I’ve made many new friends and great memories and can’t wait for my last ride with the Class of 2022.”
