Huntington High School wrestlers won all five of their dual meets to capture the championship at the Locust Valley tournament last Saturday.
The Blue Devils topped Island Trees (57-12), Oyster Bay (78-0), Great Neck South (72-6), Harborfields (75-0) and Locust Valley (57-12). “It was a great day,” head coach Travis Smith said. “We were able to get each of the kids a lot of matches and everyone wrestled well.”
It marks the second consecutive week that Huntington has won a tournament. The Blue Devils opened the season by winning a six-team round robin tournament in their own gymnasium.
Highlights of the day included:
Island Trees: Walter Kusterbeck (0:22), Lucas Cirlincione (2:32), Zachary Zboray (1:02) and Robert Smith (0:16) all won by pin. Max Casiano fought his way to a 9-4 decision. Jonathan Granito, Sam Nicotra, Enzo Pupillo, Bryan Lizama and Kaleef Riley won by forfeit.
Oyster Bay: Smith pinned his foe in 2:42. Brett Bender won his match by injury default.
Great Neck South: Cirlincione (1:27), Pupillo (0:32), Christian St. John (1:15), Lizama (2:54) and Lucas Petrizzi (2:56) won by pin.
Harborfields: Pupillo (1:37), Casiano (1:01), St. John (0:34), Lizama (2:58) and Nicotra (0:23) all won by pin. Riley grabbed an 11-4 decision.
Locust Valley: Granito (0:48), Cirlincione (3:00), Nicotra (1:33), Casiano (0:32), St. John (1:02), Petrizzi (4:58), Smith (1:12) and Riley (1:32) all won by pin. Salgado battled his way to a 10-8 decision.
Huntington hosts Newfield on Wednesday at 5:15 p.m. The Blue Devils travel to Centereach on Friday for a 7 p.m. dual meet. Huntington will compete in the Jericho Dual Meet Tournament on Saturday. The action begins at 9 a.m.
