Huntington High School’s new electronic gaming team recently wrapped up its first regular season of action. The team plays under the umbrella of the Electronic Gaming Federation, an eSports organization that sponsors competition on the local, regional and national levels.
eSports take the form of organized video game competitions. This year’s Huntington team played Overwatch, Rocket League and Super Smash Brothers Ultimate.
The new Blue Devil club meets weekly for practices and scrimmages with other schools. During its regular season, team captains are responsible for scheduling games, holding practices and coaching members of the squad.
Games are played on student equipment, such as a PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch. Students and advisors communicate through the Discord platform.
The new Huntington team members have been enthusiastic about the program and appreciative of having an opportunity to participate in it. The Blue Devil’s Rocket League team enjoyed an undefeated 2021 season.
The team’s advisors are present at every contest, watching the livestream on the Huntington Blue Devils’ Electronic Game Federation Discord. The advisors offer feedback and suggestions during the games.
During the coming round of games, teams will vie to advance to the next stage where they will compete nationally. If successful in the playoffs, the Blue Devil eSports teams have a chance to reach this year’s EGF high school national championship, which will be held virtually this year instead of at Walt Disney World, its traditional home.
The Blue Devils’ Overwatch team will square off against Los Angeles’ Crespi Carmelite High School A team in the first round of playoffs on Thursday, April 29 at 6:20 p.m.
Captains Ally Kustera and Harris Levinson along with teammates Jake Burton, Jake Amend, Luke Rinaldi, Tate Furman, Vito Aloe, Claudio Gomez, Logan Wilson and Peter Gaal will take on the Crespi Celts. The competition will be streamed on Twitch TV. It’s a best of five matches contest and can be watched live by clicking on this link: www.twitch.tv/officialEGF.
Huntington’s eSports team has already created waves nationally during its inaugural season in the Electronic Gaming Federation’s high school league and the Blue Devils aren’t finished just yet.
