Jefferson Primary School is filled with energetic, enthusiastic and inquisitive boys and girls. The building began its service to the community in September 1962 and it’s been educating local youth uninterrupted ever since. That long tradition continues today.
There is always something fun and exciting going on at Jefferson to keep students looking forward to school each day. Among the proudest youngsters in the building are those students participating in the dual language program. They are studying to become completely proficient in both English and Spanish.
Dual language teachers recently coordinated a fun initiative that involved reading aloud various books and then creating poems about them in English and Spanish.
Writing poetry is no easy task, as anyone who has tried their hand at it knows all too well, but the Jefferson dual language students took delight in the project and developed some really outstanding written works.
Kindergarten and first grade dual language teachers Jacqueline Rivas and Wendy Gallo, respectively read aloud the book, “My Colors, My World/Mis Colores, Mi Mundo” by Maya Christina Gonzalez. Afterwards, students wrote their own poems using color-related words in both Spanish and English.
Second and third grade dual language teachers Jessica Rivera-Mora and Rosita Lanoue, respectively, read aloud the book, “What Can You Do with a Paleta?” by Carmen Tafolla. Students then shared their poems in Spanish and English using color-related words about spring.
“Families thoroughly enjoyed listening to the students share their original poetry pieces,” Principal Valerie Capitulo-Saide said.
