While the Huntington High School golf team is wrapping up its current season, Blue Devil head coach Michael Marinello is already thinking about next fall when the squad hopes to return to a large degree of normalcy.
Golf is typically played in the fall at Huntington, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Blue Devils played during a late winter/early spring shortened season.

Marinello is happy that the team won’t have wait almost a full year to play again. The fall season will officially begin on Monday, August 23. The Blue Devils are looking for more golfers to join the program.
To be successful in golf takes lots of practice. It just isn’t possible to pick up a club periodically and expect to score well on the course. A successful golfer is always working on his swing. Going to a golf range, spending time on a putting green and playing rounds of nine holes or 18 holes as much as possible is really what’s required.
“Our season is ending soon, but all of our golfers need to keep playing as much as possible throughout the spring and summer,” Marinello said. “It’s a great game and it’s really fun, but if you want to score well you need to be on the course as much as you can.”
The Huntington High School golf program has captured seven Suffolk County titles and the 1978 New York State championship. It has undergone a renaissance in recent years, although the current campaign has seen it struggle as it deals with several injuries as well as COVID-19 related issues.
“We’ve had a great deal of success over the past decade in league and county play and even qualified golfers to the state championships,” Marinello said. “But we are hoping to take the program to the next level and regularly be among the very best in Suffolk. That will take a commitment from every golfer.”
