While they might have been relatively few in number, the players on the Huntington High School junior varsity girls’ volleyball team played with an awful lot of heart and energy this spring.

Coached by Woodhull Intermediate School physical education teacher Carrie Postel, the Blue Devil JV was captained by Naysa Escobar.

The Huntington roster also included freshmen Anny Carrillo-Polanco, Zaida Correal, Joanna Lee and Neurdia Osias and sophomores Sarah Krisch and Renee McKean.

The squad was generally competitive, losing four matches by 2-1 scores. “During our Northport match was when everything started to click,” Postel said. “The girls played as a team, communicated and almost won. It was a battle back and forth and they had fun.”

The Blue Devils were led by Escobar, Krisch and Correal. There were some injuries along the way, but everyone kept up their enthusiasm.

“Naysa is an individual that is always willing to learn,” said Postel about the middle hitter who led the team in “kills.” “She takes criticism well and plays with a lot of heart. She is a hustler and a leader.”

Correal shined as the team’s libero/defensive specialist. “Zaida would hustle for every ball,” Postel said. “When called upon, she played other positions, too.”

Krisch had a team high number of assists. “Sarah was our setter who ran the offense,” Postel said.

A number of injuries led to the season being cut short due to a lack of players. “They were a hardworking group,” Postel said. “They always came ready to work. They were a really great group of girls. I am hoping we get more numbers for next year.”
