A struggle to score goals this spring presented a real challenge for the Huntington High School junior varsity girls’ soccer team.
The Blue Devils managed to score five times over the course of their six game schedule. The Huntington JV’s defensive unit was asked to do more than usual and players stepped up and gave their teammates everything they had.
Coached by physical education teacher Maria Canino and captained by Neha Rathore, Jillian Panos and Gabriella Miller, the Blue Devils were led by sophomore Abby Baade’s two goals and Rathore’s two assists.
“Abby was able to get into the box for nice goals,” Canino said. “Neha was our playmaker and was able to control the field.”
A 2-1 win over Copiague was the highlight of the season. “The team this year did well facing adversity and staying together,” Canino said.
In addition to the captains, the roster also included freshmen Casey DiGioia, Katherine Estrada-Morales, Emersen Evans, Julia Henderson, Yuliana Hernandez-Perla, Jada Joseph, Caroline McGreevy, Lily Mitek, Riley Murtagh and Reese Rinaldi and sophomores Sana Amin, Yancy Chicas Interiano, Yanira Gregorio Ramirez and Gabriella Miller.
Canino expects all of the players to return to the program next fall. Several could earn a promotion to the Blue Devil varsity team.
