The Huntington School Board approved eight ambituous goals for itself

September 18, 2020

Huntington School Board members voted without opposition to adopt a set of eight goals for the district during the 2020/21 school year. Trustees took the action during a virtual meeting this past Monday night in the Adam Spector Memorial Auditorium at Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School.

Trustees have been considering possible goals with each other and Superintendent James W. Polansky. During the September 14 public meeting, Mr. Polansky discussed the process of developing the final list of goals and then reviewed each of them as trustees offered their own thoughts.

Progress toward meeting the goals is typically reviewed periodically by trustees during public meetings throughout the year.

The adopted goals for 2020/21 include:

1. Formulate and implement a school reopening plan and procedures based on such core guiding principles as safety, flexibility and quality of learning opportunities.

2. Build capacity to address students’ social/emotional needs and learning loss resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

3. Further explore and establish culturally responsive and transformative K-12 learning environments designed to meet the needs of individual learners within a diverse school community.

4. Further upgrade/enhance technological infrastructure/hardware/applications to allow for high quality remote learning experiences and seamless transitions to remote learning, with focus on means through which to promote and maintain teacher-student and student-student connections.

5. Build upon existing means of home-school communication and collaboration in an effort to address family needs under the current pandemic conditions and beyond.

6. Provide relevant and engaging professional learning opportunities designed to support hybrid and remote instructional delivery and staff social/emotional health.

7. Continue to broaden hiring and retention practices supporting a highly qualified staff, upholding consideration toward its reflection of the district’s culturally diverse population, that collectively help students to reach their academic and personal potential.

8. Seek ways to maximize revenue and manage expenses during a short and intermediate term fiscal downturn in a manner that allows for purchase of needed equipment and PPE, as well as maintenance of staffing and programs.
