Drew Spina would love to become a high school music teacher, so the Huntington High School senior is surrounding himself with all things music this year, including a credit bearing internship with veteran music teacher Jason Giachetti.

A gifted percussionist, Mr. Spina is planning an exciting future. He is thriving at the high school and he thoroughly enjoys the atmosphere of school. In fact, he likes it so much that he’d like to make a career of it and become a music teacher himself.

The teenager has been looking forward to taking Advanced Placement Music Theory with Mr. Giachetti as well as the Bible Literature English elective course taught by Kelly Krycinski.

“I am looking forward to work with Mr. [Michael] Schwendemann and Mrs. [Victoria] Garbariano outside of the classroom,” Mr. Spina said. Mr. Schwendemann is a Huntington High School English teacher who is also the drama club’s longtime faculty advisor. Ms. Garbarino is the high school choir director, who is also integrally involved with drama club productions.

Mr. Spina said he “cannot wait” to dive into a variety of activities, including being a student director of the school play alongside Mr. Schwendemann, working with the stage crew, performing with the jazz band and serving in the student government.

The senior’s closest friends are Jorge Cisneros and Lily O’Heir. “Drew is not just my best friend; he’s the brother that I never had,” Mr. Cisneros said. “I have seen him grow as a person over the past years and as a musician as well. His character always makes people smile and he always puts his best in everything he does. I know for sure that one day I will see him go places.”

Mr. Spina and his friends enjoy wonderful relationships with each other. They are extremely loyal and supportive and bring out the best in one another.

“Drew is one of my best friends,” Ms. O’Heir said. “I have known him since first grade and I am so proud of how much he has grown since then. Drew has a heart of gold and never fails to impress me with the amount of love he gives to everyone. He is an extremely hard worker, especially in music. I can’t wait to see where life takes him. Seeing as he wants to be a teacher, there is no job that fits him better. I know that he will change lives through his profession and succeed in life. I am so proud to call Drew my best friend!”

Mr. Spina is interested in studying at SUNY College at Potsdam, Syracuse University, University of Rochester, Temple University and SUNY College at Fredonia. Each of the school’s boasts a highly regarded music education program.
