Before the Huntington High School varsity and junior varsity girls’ lacrosse teams ever had a chance to play a game or the team at J. Taylor Finley Middle School was even able to suit up for a single practice last spring the COVID-19 pandemic forced schools to close and interscholastic sports to be cancelled.

All these months later, the Blue Devil girls’ lacrosse coaching staff is beginning to piece back together the program. The 2021 season is set to run from early May to mid-June with a scaled back schedule of games.

Players eligible to return with varsity experience include Alexa Amorison, Laurel Bonn, Katie Browne, Gretel Cassell, Marina Durand, Gianna Fote, Jordan Forte, Julia Gorecki, Charlotte Maggio, Lisa Martin, Emily Plachta and Julia Steinberg.

Players who last took the field in 2019 for a JV game include Lainey Carney, Isabella DiBenedetto, Makaylah Frazier, Emily Geller, Caroline Gorecki, Sophie Laserson, Tallulah Pitti, Ainsley Proctor, Gianna Prosseda, Kailey Rappel, Leda Roldan, Regan Sansiviero, Grace Stolfa, Karen Ulloa-Moreira, Riley Zink, Grace Agrillo, Kaci McDonald, Margaret Morrisroe, Emma O’Brien, Vanessa Salmon and Erin Scanlon

The seventh and eighth graders who comprised Finley’s 2019 team are now freshmen and sophomores. That group includes Talia Addeo, Grace Allen, Katherine Balm, Miranda Bellissimo, Kayleigh Bender, McKenna Buffa, Hannah Byers, Tess Calabria, Jane Callery, Gemma Cartwright, Keira Coulter, Casey DiGioia, Emersen Evans, Stephanie Flores, Quinn Fox, Lily Froggatt Bale, Jada Joseph, Marley Joseph, Samantha Koepele, Sarah Krisch, Sophie Lange, Megan Lewis, Isabella McCarthy, Samantha McGloin, Caroline McGreevy, Riley Murtagh, Jordana Paniccia, Brooke Parks, Olivia Polinsky, Neha Rathore, Reese Rinaldi, Jordan Rund, Maria Sabatino, Anna Safonte, Carlee Schultz, Olivia Spada, Ava Tizzio and Anna Bell Young.

Considering the amount of time that has passed since the players last took the field, some might have found other interests. Coaches are starting to determine now who intends to play in the spring as they begin piecing the program back together.

The Huntington School Board has appointed coaches for the varsity, junior varsity and Finley teams. Beth Vogelsang will return as varsity head coach with Vincent Tannazzo and Carli Clementi serving as varsity assistants. Shea Scully is the JV head coach with Chiara Maimone as the assistant coach. Linda Costello-Roth is back as Finley’s head coach. She will be assisted by Ysrael Gonzalez.
