Options for Spring Driver Education Program Participants

Spring driver education program participants at Huntington High School have decisions to make

May 29, 2020

The spring driver education program at Huntington High School was first put on hold and then cancelled in the midst the COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing school closure. Program participants must now make a decision about what they want to do moving forward.

“In March, the State Education Department only allowed programs that had completed 18 hours or more of required lecture classes to continue via online learning,” said Georgia D. McCarthy, who coordinates the program for Huntington UFSD. “Since we will not be returning for this school year, those participating in the spring program need to consider the best option for their course completion.”

Options for current sophomores and juniors include:

  1. Complete road and lecture hours this summer if the district is permitted to offer them.
  2. Complete road and lecture hours in the fall.
  3. Retake all road and lecture hours during the 2021 spring program session.

“There will be no additional fees,” Ms. McCarthy said. “The three options are contingent upon state permission to hold the course during any of the designated time periods.”

Seniors will have the option of either requesting a refund or completing their road and lecture hours this summer if the program runs.

Refunds can be requested by contacting Ms. McCarthy at gmccarthy@hufsd.edu. Include the full name of the student, mailing address and DMV permit number. Ms. McCarthy will respond and attach a COVID-19 refund claim voucher. Vouchers should be completed as soon as possible and sent to Ms. McCarthy either via email at the above address or through US Mail to: Huntington High School; Attn: Georgia D. McCarthy; 188 Oakwood Road, Huntington, NY 11743.

New developments will be posted on Huntington UFSD’s website at www.hufsd.edu and on driver education teacher Patricia Quinn’s e-board accessible through the district website.
