The Huntington High School boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams recently presented awards to their top seniors. For more than half-a-century the yearly honors were announced at the Blue Devil senior athletic awards dinner, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the festivities moved to an online format for 2020.
Huntington boys’ lacrosse coaches Julian Watts, Andy Gutierrez and Patrick Reilly tapped seven seniors for special awards.
Aedan McDonald (Utica College) was named the Defensive MVP while Billy Burton (Arcadia University) was picked as the Offensive MVP. Coaches Award recipients included Cole Pillion (Oberlin College), Michael Wright (SUNY College at Geneseo), Jonathan Koumas (Ithaca College), Charles O’Rourke (University of Massachusetts Amherst) and Nicholas Mattio (University of Alabama).
Blue Devil girls’ lacrosse coaches Beth Vogelsang, Vincent Tannazzo and Carli Clementi presented eight seniors with special awards.
Abigail Maichin (University of Notre Dame) and Maya Santa-Maria (University of Michigan) were named Huntington’s Most Valuable Player Award honorees. Coaches Award recipients included Holly Wright (SUNY College at Cortland), Marissa Stafford (Cornell University), Megan Agrillo (Sacred Heart University), Lena Annunziata (Penn State University), Caroline Hartough (Youngstown State University) and Emily Cheshire (Lehigh University).
The players and coaches of both the boys’ and girls’ teams were heartbroken that the 2020 season was cancelled in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The two Blue Devil squads were expected to be very competitive this past spring, but it just wasn’t meant to be.
