Leah Sheran is one of Huntington High School’s sophomore stars. She is integrally involved in numerous clubs, holds a leadership position in student government and is excelling academically. But all of that just scratches the surface of what this exceptional young woman is all about.

“I really love the classes that I am taking this year, but the few that stand out to me the most are social studies, photography and chemistry,” Ms. Sheran said. “I am looking forward to working with my photography teacher Mrs. [Pamela] Piffard and my social studies teacher Mrs. [Kaitlyn] Hanft.”

The teenager serves in the high school student government as treasurer of the Class of 2023. “Student government is a great opportunity for me as I can get more involved in school events and help build my leadership skills,” Ms. Sheran said. “It is definitely my favorite club.”

Ms. Sheran is very involved around the high school, participating in Key Club and Habitat for Humanity and as a member of both the English Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society.

“My closest friends include Ella Kamenstein, Tessie Maerz, Stephanie Wickey and Anna Bell Young,” Ms. Sheran said. “I have known Ella most of my life and she has always been there for me. Some teachers that have mentored me during my high school experience are Mrs. [Paige] Tyree, Mrs. Hanft and Mrs. [Jordan] Schessler. They have all made their classes so much fun and are great teachers.”

Ms. Sheran works very hard in her classes and she has developed several wonderful relationships with faculty members and classmates.

“The teacher that has stood out to me the most is Mrs. [Lori] Kenny,” Ms. Sheran said. “She always helped me reach my full potential in her Living Environment class that I took freshman year. She is very welcoming and will always be someone I can count on.”

While the COVID-19 pandemic has changed so many aspects of the usual school experience, Ms. Sheran is doing whatever she can to derive as much out of it as possible.

Ms. Sheran’s advice to incoming ninth graders? “Get involved in activities and take a few challenging courses,” she said. “There are so many clubs and teams to be a part of and taking a class or joining a club out of your comfort zone really helps you discover yourself and your abilities.”

Among the colleges that currently interest Ms. Sheran are the University of California, Los Angeles and the University of Michigan. “I am unsure of what I want to study or build a career in, but most likely business or marketing,” she said.

With more than two years remaining at Huntington High School, Ms. Sheran is well on her way to compiling a long list of achievements.

“My Huntington experience has been great,” Ms. Sheran said. “One of the best opportunities I’ve had was the dual language program. I have participated in it since kindergarten. I have had many experiences here that I will remember for the rest of my life.”
