Southdown’s Stars Shining Brighter Than Ever

Southdown School's Star Students Award recipients are all working very hard.

December 7, 2020

Even with all that is happening across the globe, Southdown Primary School’s stars are shining brighter than ever as students go about their business with determination and vigor.

Every month Principal Scott Oshrin hosts a Splash Assembly during which the Stars of the Month Award is presented. Due to COVID-19, this year’s assembly programs have been held virtually during the late morning. The format allowed students both in school and at home to view the proceedings simultaneously.

The Splash Assembly draws its name from Southdown’s mascot; a dolphin, which is widely known for using its fin to splash water onto those nearby. The Stars of the Month Award is cherished and received with pride by students who are recognized for their all-around effort in and out of the classroom.

November’s Stars of the Month include:

Universal Pre-Kindergarten: Gia Spagnoletti; Kindergarten: Juliette Kelly, Samantha Saravia-Ramirez, Angela Bonilla Maldonado, Francesco Savattta; First Grade: Darius Clarke, Adrian Martinez, Peyton Mendreski, Lizbeth Solares Herrera, Nathan Holbreich; Second Grade: Eamon McManus, Amora Ingram, Benjamin Mitek, Juliet Grijalva de la Cruz; Third Grade: Katherine Gooch, Emma Aversano, Matthew Barch.

Southdown custodial department members Thomas Calderaro, Allek Hendrickson and Nicholas Barone were November’s staff award recipients. “We thank them so much for the job they do each day and for helping to keep us safe,” Mr. Oshrin said.

Every Splash Assembly includes an educational component and so did this one. Teacher Pamela Schwarting discussed the concept of kindness and provided some examples of how it is practiced. She also announced some upcoming events to highlight the importance of being kind to each other. Teacher Carlene Cournane spoke about empathy, explaining what it is and offering some practical examples of how a person can show it to others
