Teenagers with a passion for dance, cheerleading or gymnastics can find a welcome home with the Huntington High School Highsteppers.

The hip competitive dance squad is the Blue Devils’ varsity kickline team, performing during football and basketball games and at special events and vying in regional and national competitions.

The Highsteppers are led by junior captains Jillian LoTurco and Ella Naima and senior captains Hallie Armengau, Lainey Carney and Jailyn Fuentes.

“If you love to dance, travel and make lifelong friends, Huntington Highsteppers will be the perfect fit for you,” Ms. LoTurco said.

Late summer conditioning and practices kickoff the season, which runs through the national championships in Florida in February. Practices are typically held from 3-5 p.m. on Monday-Wednesday during the school year.

“If someone is passionate about dancing and/or has a background in gymnastics, then Highstepping is perfect for them,” Ms. Fuentes said. “As a team, we all really value working together and creating a bond with one another that is unbreakable. I’ve found some of my closest friends from Highstepping and it allows members to meet others from different grades, which is always a great thing. Getting to enhance and show off our talents while also creating a strong dynamic with one another is really something we pride ourselves on. Being on the team has been the highlight of my high school experience.”

The Highsteppers’ halftime shows are always high octane affairs. The performances highlight the incredible dance skills and athleticism of the team members and never fail to elicit cheers from the crowd.

Competitions feature separate jazz, pom and team performance components. The group has gained a national reputation and has won many honors over the past decade.

“A very important part of this club is to create a close bond with all your teammates,” states a promotional packet recently shared with Huntington High School students. “In order to create this bond, we love to spend time with each other out of school, whether it’s having group sleepovers before football games, going out to lunch or even group FaceTiming to catch up.”
