Kiara Gelbman and Paul Katigbak are certainly leaving their mark at Huntington High School where the two Class of 2020 members are among the most distinguished recent graduates. The duo claimed this year’s New York State Attorney General’s Triple C Awards.
Sponsored by State Attorney General Letitia James, the Triple C Award recognizes “the courage, character and commitment of New York State’s outstanding students. Whether succeeding in academic pursuits, participating in community service, displaying leadership skills, or overcoming personal obstacles, these students provide us with hope for a brighter future. This award was established to honor these student leaders.”
Ms. Gelbman is headed to the University of Colorado Boulder to study journalism and sports media. A member of Huntington’s National Honor Society as well as its English Honor Society, Science Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society, she played on the Blue Devil varsity volleyball team for three years
As co-editor in chief of The Dispatch, Huntington High School’s student newspaper, Ms. Gelbman helped bring the publication fully into the digital age.
The new Huntington grad said she aspires to be a sports or travel journalist, “allowing me to document the world around me while doing what I love.”
Mr. Katigbak intends to study biology at Boston College. He has spent the past four years excelling in his studies, fencing and playing lacrosse and traveling internationally during vacation periods.
A member of Huntington’s National Honor Society, Math Honor Society, French Honor Society and Science Honor Society, Mr. Katigbak held executive offices with the high school’s student government. A two-time National History Day award recipient he has always kept his eyes affixed to his goals, which has helped pave the way for his success.
