Lucas Kelly is leaving big footprints at Huntington High School where he recently graduated near the top of the Class of 2020. The teenager plans to study political science at Temple University in Philadelphia.
Mr. Kelly captured the Huntington Fire Department’s Firefighter Frank Ambrosio Sr. Award for Humanities, which carries a $500 stipend. He also garnered the high school’s Journalism Award.
A member of the National Honor Society as well as the Social Studies Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society, Mr. Kelly earned the designation of Distinguished Senior following a four year run of academic excellence that saw him maintain a grade average in excess of 90 during every semester of high school.
Focusing on himself has been a key to Mr. Kelly’s success. That focus and the discipline that he was able to foster within himself has helped him to achieve across all academic disciplines.
Mr. Kelly was co-editor in chief and also the layout editor of The Dispatch, Huntington High School’s student newspaper. He’s well informed, articulate, creative and a strong writer.
The teenager came to Huntington UFSD as a third grader, transferring into Flower Hill School from St. Patrick’s. Mr. Kelly has served in administrative assistant and public relations roles with the high school’s student government, volunteered at Tri-CYA and participated in Huntington’s Key Club, environmental club and debate club.
Mr. Kelly has also done plenty of traveling, including to Italy, Paris, London, Canada and numerous other destinations.
The new grad has also been involved in the Sunrise Movement Hub of Huntington. It’s an organization committed to stopping climate change and creating millions of good jobs in the process.
As Mr. Kelly prepares to begin his studies at Temple University, the teachers he is leaving behind at Huntington High School have no doubt that he will thrive on the college level.
