Julian Watts has hit the ground running in his new role as dean of students at Woodhull Intermediate School. The first month of school flew by as the former health teacher has kept busy around the building with a long list of assignments and projects.
“I am excited to start a role in education that allows me to provide students with skills and tools to manage everyday challenges,” Mr. Watts said. “As dean of students, it is important to me that everyone steps through our doors and are excited to be here. This attitude allows us to meet the academic expectations in a positive, fun and nurturing environment. I will focus on social and emotional learning and five core components; self-awareness, relationship skills, self-management, responsible decision making and social awareness. Personal achievement and growth are a gratifying part of this process.”

Mr. Watts joined the district’s faculty as a full-time Huntington health education teacher in September 2015. Prior to that he worked in the district on a part-time basis for two years. A graduate of St. Anthony’s High School, he obtained a Bachelor of Business Administration degree at Hofstra University, where he also earned a master’s degree in health education. He studied for his state administrative certification at Stony Brook University. He is the Blue Devil boys’ varsity lacrosse team’s head coach and previously coached football at J. Taylor Finley Middle School.
“My first months at Woodhull have been a memorable experience,” Mr. Watts said. “The faculty and staff are very supportive and welcoming. I am looking forward to being a part of the events and traditions that have shaped the school’s culture. It is great to witness the interaction between students and teachers as they form valuable relationships.”
Mr. Watts and first year Woodhull School Principal Lara Gonzalez are closely collaborating throughout every school day. Upcoming events include a PTA clothing drive (Saturday, October 19), a fifth grade field trip to the John W. Engeman Theatre at Northport (Monday, October 21) and a fourth grade Halloween Dance (Monday, October 28).
“My advice to parents is to be understanding and supportive,” Mr. Watts said. “I encourage parents to urge their children to become more involved in at least one of the many school activities Woodhull has to offer.”
