Kathryn Montefusco is headed back to Ithaca College for the New York State Swimming & Diving Championships on Friday and Saturday. The Huntington High School freshman was All-State last fall as an eighth grader and she has even higher hopes this weekend.

The Blue Devil pool star is coached by Christopher Helmke and Meg McConnell. She’s a hardnosed competitor who is always searching for a better performance.

“I’m really looking forward to swimming at the states this week,” Montefusco said. “They’re being held at Ithaca College, which has a fast pool. I enjoy swimming there.”

A two-time All-County swimmer for Huntington, the teenager keeps getting better. She has qualified for the state championships in the 100 breaststroke and 100 freestyle.

“I’ll be going to the states with all the other swimmers who qualified from Section XI so it should be a lot of fun,” Montefusco said. “My goal is to swim my best times and make the finals in both events.”

When she jumps into the pool at Ithaca, Montefusco will be in the best shape of her life and ready to set new personal marks, if not win state medals.

“I’ve been training hard every day after school with Coach Helmke and Coach Meg at the Huntington YMCA pool,” Montefusco said. The teenager also swims with the YMCA Bluefish club team. After the high school season ends, she swims fulltime with the YMCA squad.
