Nine Huntington High School varsity field hockey players captured post-season honors after turning in standout seasons for the Blue Devils.

Coached by Kathy Wright and Allison Conlon, the roster consisted of 20 players, including some of the state’s best. “This team was determined, positive, supportive, encouraging and never gave up,” Wright said.

Anna Wickey (All-State), Holly Wright (All-County), Megan Byrnes (All-County honorable mention), Maya Santa-Maria (All-Classification), Lauren LoScalzo (All-Division), Brooke Biernacki (All-Division), Julie Rogel (All-Division Goalie Award), Grace Agrillo (Unsung Hero Award) and Laurel Bonn (All-Tournament) all garnered post-season honors.

Wickey notched 10 goals and four assists from her midfield position. Wright tallied three goals and four assists, also at midfield. Byrnes was an offensive force, too, with three goals and three assists at forward. LoScalzo scored six goals and added an assist at forward. Biernacki and Santa-Maria starred on defense. Rogel recorded 118 saves in the cage.

“Our two big accomplishments included an amazing victory over Comsewogue in the shootout phase of overtime and the victory over Eastport-South Manor in a league game,” Wright said. “Both of these victories moved us into a playoff position.”

The Blue Devils will be losing Biernacki, Byrnes, LoScalzo, Santa-Maria, Wickey, Wright and Madelyn Kye to graduation. Huntington will return Rogel, Grace Agrillo, Laurel Bonn, Gemma Cartwright, Andrea Delcid, Isabella DiBenedetto, Mackenzie Eccles, Tessie Maerz, Lisa Martin, Gianna Prosseda, Tess Stanley, Stephanie Wickey, Riley Zink, Carlee Schultz, Kaci McDonald, Erin Scanlon and Grace Allen.

Looking ahead to next fall, the coaching staff is optimistic. “We will be a young team with an experienced goalie returning,” Wright said. “I am predicting that we may be able to finish as the 12th team in the league and enter into the first playoff round.”
