Seven spring varsity athletic teams at Huntington High School have earned prestigious New York State Public High School Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete Awards based on the grade point averages of respective team members.

Huntington’s girls’ track and field, boys’ track and field, boys’ tennis, softball, baseball, girls’ lacrosse and boys’ lacrosse teams all received state scholar athlete team awards. Dozens of individual Blue Devil athletes were also recognized.

Although the NYSPHSAA doesn’t officially recognize crew as a sanctioned sport, the Blue Devil crew team and 12 of its members met the state Scholar-Athlete Award requirements and are also being honored by the district.

To receive team recognition, the team’s average GPA for 75 percent of the roster must be equal to or greater than 90.00. Higher athlete GPAs can be used offset lower ones. However, only students with a 90 or above receive scholar athlete pins, even if a student with a lower GPA was used in the calculation.

“We are thrilled so many of our spring teams and student-athletes have been recognized,” said Georgia D. McCarthy, district director of health, physical education and interscholastic athletics.
