Evelyn Hernandez is planning for a future that includes caring for the sick and saving lives. The Huntington High School senior is headed to Hofstra University in the fall, where she intends to study biology on a pre-med track in anticipation of a career as an oncologist.
“The reason I choose Hofstra is because I got a scholarship to attend the university,” Ms. Hernandez said. “It will cover almost all of my tuition. Ever since I went to their open house during my junior year I was in love with the campus and impressed with how nice everyone was there. I love how the classroom sizes are very small. I know that I’ll be able to succeed. Hofstra reminds me of Huntington High School because all of the faculty are so nice and welcoming.”

Prior to choosing to attend Hofstra, Ms. Hernandez considered Quinnipiac University, Adelphi University, SUNY Cortland, University at Buffalo and University of Rochester. “Although they were all amazing schools, I knew that I would much more rather prefer to stay close to home and Hofstra felt like a second home to me,” she said.
The teenager plans to major in biology at Hofstra and pursue a pre-med track. Ms. Hernandez plans to conduct research at the university, join the swimming club and participate in the college’s Relay For Life. She also intends to continue volunteering at Huntington Hospital.
The senior’s academic schedule including classes in Advanced Placement Physics, AP Government and Politics, AP Seminar, Pre-Calculus, Spanish 5 Honors, Science Research and Orchestra. She has garnered a spot on the Huntington High School Honor Roll.
Ms. Hernandez has been on the Blue Devil soccer, swimming and track and field teams. She has participated in the science research program, Grandfriends club and the A World of Difference club. A scholar-mentor, she has vied in the Biology Olympiad and Science Olympiad. The teenager performs in the high school orchestra. A member of the Spanish Honor Society, the senior has volunteered as a children’s tutor at the Family Service League.
Ms. Hernandez hopes to graduate from Hofstra and move on to medical school and study to be an oncologist. “The reason why I plan on being an oncologist is because I enjoy helping others even on their rough days,” she said. “I hope someday I can make a difference.”
As the teenager heads toward the finish line of her high school years, Ms. Hernandez has been able to look back with pride and satisfaction at her sensational run.
“One thing that I will remember about Huntington is how every faculty and staff has been so supportive and helped me succeed through my four years of high school and the amazing opportunities it has for students,” Ms. Hernandez said.
