Brisk early season temperatures have posed a challenge for the Huntington High School varsity boys’ tennis team, but longtime head coach Jamie Fishlow doesn’t allow anything to stand in his way.

Between snow on the courts and cold outdoor temperatures, the Blue Devils have been forced to train indoors. Since Fishlow is a master at fitness and conditioning, he has put the gym time to good use, getting his players in tip-top shape and putting them through indoor skill drills.

The Blue Devils went 5-5 in league play last spring and were 5-8 overall. The junior varsity finished with a 6-4 mark. J. Taylor Finley Middle School’s boys’ tennis team compiled a 7-1 record.

This spring’s varsity and junior varsity rosters include freshmen Alexander Frawley, Sean Hassett, Matthew Levinson, Matthew Minicozzi and William Weber; sophomores Jonathan Apelsinov, Joshua Bailin, Aaron Chin, Aiden Lefebvre, Nathan Ribando and Richard Rongo; juniors Matthew Girimonti, Andrew Knowles, Ryan Knowles, Justin Lokos, John Segreti, Brandon Varady and Jason Verville; and seniors Connor Dougal and Max Gordon.

Huntington’s varsity schedule includes non-league matches against Half Hollow Hills East, Brentwood, Center Moriches, Harborfields and Half Hollow Hills West and home and away league contests with Walt Whitman, Smithtown East, Hauppauge, Kings Park and John H. Glenn.

Fishlow has been at the helm of Huntington’s boys’ and girls’ varsity tennis programs for more than two decades. He still loves the sport and he’s just as committed as ever to helping every player maximize his performance. This year’s Blue Devil squad hopes to reach post-season play.
