The Huntington High School Math Honor Society’s Regents review night never fails to amaze.
The annual initiative is all about teenagers helping teenagers. This year’s session drew about 60 students who were in various stages of preparing for the Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II Regents. The Math Honor Society supplied 23 tutors, who went right to work. The group kept at it for two hours without a break.
“It was extremely impressive how students and tutors stayed focused for the entire two hours,” said teacher Monica Racz, who serves as the Math Honor Society’s faculty advisor. “Students were chosen by their teachers for their work ethic and giving them the opportunity for extra help to pass the Regents. As the advisors, Keith Mattis and I were impressed with the tutor’s patience and ability to teach the content to their peers. Not only did students learn math, but they made connections with students where their paths may never cross. Hopefully they made future friends.”
Huntington’s Math Honor Society chapter is led by executive board officers Katherine Stock (president), Jack Farrell (vice-president), Arashdeep Singh (treasurer), Charles Sze (secretary) and Jack Langton (tutoring coordinator).
The tutors not only gave assistance in math, but also provided guidance on studying techniques that they have successfully utilized.
“I am extremely grateful to my colleagues Lynn Hendricks and Kara Horn for donating their time to assist in supervising this event,” Mrs. Racz said. “We are truly grateful for their help.”
To be eligible for membership in the Society students must be enrolled in a math class higher than Algebra 2 (such as pre-Calculus, AP Calculus or AP Statistics) and have a minimum average of 85 in all high school math courses.
The participating Math Honor Society members took delight in the opportunity to help others and clear up questions they might have prior to sitting for the Regents exams. When the session concluded, the tutors were exhausted.
Participating Math Honor Society members were able to choose the math course they felt most comfortable with and facilitate a review session to give students more confidence on their upcoming Regents exams and to answer any last-minute questions.
