Shortstop Anna Wickey and catcher Alexandra Gerbavsits led the Huntington High School varsity softball team through a challenging season.

Wickey was recognized as All-Division and Gerbavsits was named All-League after each of the juniors turned in strong performances at the plate and in the field.

Coached by John Walsh and Jim Byrnes, the Blue Devils won their first game and then struggled the rest of the way, finishing with a 1-17 mark.

The team consisted of freshmen Madelyn Bavaro, Cynthia Contreras, Lauren Holly, Jasjeet Kaur, Victoria Mangan and Kathryn Sanseviro; sophomores Brenda Acevedo, Marilyn Bonilla, Keyla Maldonado Molina, Angie Mata and Cecilia Vanegas Moreno; juniors Melissa Aleman Machuca, Jeslyn Alfaro-Andrade, Megan Byrnes, Alexandra Gerbavsits, Leyda Ponce Guzman, Daniela Ramos Campos, Isabella Toscano, Daniela Weihskopf Escobar and Anna Wickey; and seniors Ashley Coleman, Maya DelGiudice and Morgan Minicozzi.

“Anna is a top player in the league,” Walsh said about Wickey. “Even being injured, she impressed our opponents. Alex is an outstanding catcher who works hard every day.”

Byrnes and DelGiudice handled the pitching duties and played infield. Toscano was outstanding at third base. Minicozzi shined patrolling the outfield.

“The team grew up together,” Walsh said. “I hope they take another step next year. With only two seniors we should have good numbers in 2020.”
