Huntington UFSD has announced information about its fall driver education program

July 29, 2019

The Huntington School District’s driver education program pre-dates the existing high school building. The initiative took root in the 1950s when the high school was located on Main Street in the building that today is used as town hall. All these years later, the program is still going strong.

Registration for the fall driver education program for Huntington High School juniors and seniors will be held on Friday, September 6 between 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. in room 122. (Seniors will register first.)

Registration for all other students (sophomores will register first and then non-residents) will be held on Monday, September 9, also between 2:30-3:30 p.m. in room 122.

Participation in the program is limited to those who have reached the age of 16 by September 1 and who hold a valid learner’s permit. The 70 openings will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

The course will run from September 16 through December 21. Lecture classes will be held on Mondays and Tuesdays. Students must attend both days. Road classes will be held Monday through Saturday. Students must attend one road class per week. The specific hours each day will depend upon an individual’s schedule. Schedules will be assigned on a first come, first served basis on the day of registration.

Since there are numerous school holidays during the fall semester, those participating in the fall driver education program are asked to review the course calendar issued at registration for specific lecture and road class dates.

Students may only miss a total of three classes in the program, but all missed classes must immediately be made up. Make-ups of more than one road class may result in an additional fee. Once a fourth class is missed, the student will be dropped from the program and will not be eligible for a “Blue Card” (MV-285). No classes can be made-up once a new semester has begun. (Lost MV-285 “Blue Cards” can be replaced for a fee of $25.)

A passing grade for 24 hours of lecture and 24 hours in the car are required to receive the MV-285.

The registration fee for the course is $500 for residents and $525 for non-residents. For more information call the high school at 631-673-2018.
