The Huntington School District’s adult education program is gearing up for promises to be a sensational spring semester, continuing a tradition of service to residents that is now in its seventh decade.

The program was first organized in the 1950s and all these years later it is still offerings courses, workshops and seminars of interest to those of all ages.
Spring classes begin the week of Monday, February 25. Online registration will be available through Turbo Roster at http://www.TurboRoster.com. Registration is also available by mail or in the lobby of Huntington High School on Wednesday, February 6 from 6-9 p.m. (If inclement weather forces postponement of in-person registration, the make-up date is Wednesday, February 13.)
Courses run for eight week blocks, unless otherwise indicated in the spring bulletin.
The line-up of spring courses includes Basketball for Men, Introduction to Ceramics, Cooking, Crochet, Economics, ESL for Parents of ELL Students, Dance: East Coast Swing & Lindy Hop, French for Beginners & Beginners Plus, French-Intermediate, Hatha Yoga, How to Work with Google Drive, History of the United States I, Introduction to Computers-Using Microsoft Office, Italian for Beginners, Italian-Intermediate/Advanced, Knitting, Microsoft Office Advanced, Photography Lessons, Plant-based Recipes for Optimal Health, PowerPoint, Preparation for Citizenship, Indoor Soccer for Men, Spanish for Beginners, Spanish-Intermediate/Advanced, Street Law, Stretch and Tone with Essentrics, Tai Chi Chi King, Fun with Watercolors and Zumba Gold.
Seminars include Friends & Families CPR and First Aid for Children, How to Excel in Interviews, It’s Not What You Say – It’s How You Say It, Job Effectiveness Training, Navigating Medicare and Passport to Retirement
Program Director Beth McCoy is always open to new ideas for additional program offerings. She encourages suggestions from those who would like to take a specific class or teach one.
Regular course fees are set at $15 for those residents aged 60 or over (except for those classes marked limited or no senior district), $55 for other district residents and $65 for those living outside the Huntington School District. Fees can vary based on the specific course and the duration of the class. (One day seminars can run as little as $20 for residents.)
There are also courses offered through Western Suffolk BOCES, including Adult Basic Education (GED) and beginner, intermediate and advanced level classes in English as a Second Language.
Course and seminar sites include Huntington High School, J. Taylor Finley Middle School, Woodhull Intermediate School, Jefferson Primary School and Southdown Primary School. Exact locations for individual offerings can be found in the program brochure.
The adult education program is self-sustaining. It is conducted primarily for adults in the community, but is open to those as young as 16 years of age wherever space exists, with the exception of basketball and where otherwise indicated.
