Jack Stewart is moving to New Jersey, but he will always remember Huntington High School’s science research program, in which the teenager has thrived and achieved competitive success.
Mr. Stewart’s family is relocating to the Garden State, where his father owns a building and a business. The junior is transferring to Morristown High School after he completes his midterm exams later this month. His first day at his new high school will be January 31.
Huntington junior Jack Stewart will always remember the Science Research program.
“Science Research is my favorite class that I have ever taken at Huntington High School,” Mr. Stewart said. “Its unique class setup has given me several opportunities that other classes could not have. For example, when I was a freshman, I didn’t know many people in Huntington other than other freshman. Because Science Research is a mixed class comprised of students from all grades, I was introduced to many upperclassman at the time who I am still very close with. Furthermore, Science Research has also given me the opportunity to work with two of my best friends. My freshman year, I worked with my friend Henry Cartwright and received a Merit Award at the Long Island Science Congress at St. Anthony’s High school. My sophomore year, I partnered up with another one of my great friends, Jack Langton and we also won also won a Merit Award at LISC.
A very strong student academically, Mr. Stewart has already committed to attending the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado, where he intends to also play on the lacrosse team.
The junior has worked closely with Huntington High School science teacher Lori Kenny and his classmates in the research program. The class has been one of the highlights of his daily routine and he is going to miss it when he leaves for his new school.
“I love Science Research class because of the freedom it gives to the students,” Mr. Stewart said. “Rather than having nightly homework, Science Research asks you to develop your project throughout the year and work at your pace. This allowed me and my competitive nature to work very hard and compete as well as I could with my partners at these competitions.”
As his time at Huntington High School winds down, Mr. Stewart has been reflecting on his experience in the only district he has known since beginning kindergarten. The Blue Devil lacrosse program will also miss him on the field this spring.
“I’d really like to say thank you to my past teacher, Mrs. Kenny for all of the guidance she has given me throughout my time at Huntington High School and in the Science Research program,” Mr. Stewart said. “It truly has been one of the best experiences I’ve ever had in this school. Thank you Mrs. Kenny and thank you Science Research. Without this class, I wouldn’t have made some of my best friends!”
