Washington Primary School kindergarteners in the dual language program recently participated in a really neat project.

The youngsters worked with teacher Karina Menter and teacher aide Cindy Gooley and reused discarded household products to create practical and downright ingenious new items that can be used at home and even to play with their pets.

“The project is part of the OHM science program and was the culmination of the ecosystems unit,” Mrs. Menter said. “Students learned about what happens to the trash that we discard and how it produces pollution and damages our planet. They also learned about reusing and recycling. Their projects were done at home with the support of their parents. All of the students were very excited and proud to show how they used recycled materials to create something fun and/or something useful.”

Students presented their creations to their classmates and engaged in a question and answer period to explain the materials and processes they used to create their projects.

The projects were so impressive that Washington Principal Michelle Richards decided to set-up two six-foot long tables near the main lobby and display all of the work so students and teachers across every grade level could see what the talented youngsters created.

“I am so very proud of these outstanding boys and girls,” Dr. Richards said.
