Southdown Primary School’s monthly Splash Award assembly was once again a fun learning experience as students, faculty and staff gathered in the gym late last week to celebrate some special youngsters and learn some valuable lessons.

The focus of the assembly program was on “tone of voice.” Third grade teacher Pamela Schwarting led students through a discussion on the importance of speaking with a respectful tone of voice to adults and classmates.

The gathering also celebrated students who ride on Bus 5 to and from school each day. The youngsters were rewarded for their positive bus behavior. “They will get to pick from the principal’s prize box as a reward,” Southdown Principal Scott Oshrin said.

The assembly also recognized a set of sensational boys and girls with Splash Awards. Southdown is the home of the dolphins, the school’s mascot. Students are awarded “splashes” for displaying positive behavior in the classroom and all around the building, including being kind to others, demonstrating proper behavior in hallways and even boosting the spirits of someone feeling a little down.

One Southdown student is selected from each class in the building for formal recognition at the monthly “splash” assembly. The school considers these youngsters to be its “stars of the month.”

January’s Splash Award recipients include:

Kindergarten: Julian Dileo, Numan Alvarado Interiano, Jayden Clark, Jefferson Acosta Fuentes, Daniel Ventura Sanchez:

First grade: David Elvir, Jonah Abraham, Jennifer Argueta Romero;

Second grade: Shajini Kamalendran, Katherine Amaya Cruz, “Tamia” Montier Delgado;

Third grade: Emmet Cocoman, Melody Pierre-Louis, Regan Murtagh, Jaime Uvena, Tulsi Singh

Southdown second grade teacher Lauren Wesnofske was also recognized for her outstanding efforts on behalf of the building’s students. She was given the privilege of putting her car in the principal’s parking spot for the entire month of February.
